I ran into a stranger on the street the other day
I wanted to avoid him but I couldn’t get away
It seemed he lived a simple life, possessions he had few
Just a book and nothing more, I guess that’s all he knew.
His clothes were torn and tattered and I think his hands were raw
A trace of blood was visible, through the gloves he wore
I couldn’t tell if he was black, or white or red or what
And when I asked, he told me that he’d long since forgot
I asked him were he came from, he gazed toward the sky
And then he said “ just up the street “ and winked with just one eye
I asked him where he’s heading, just where he’s going to
He smiled and quietly whispered … “the same place as you”.
He never asked for money but I figured that he would
Try to get a buck or two eventually if he could
He asked if I was happy, if I had peace within
This funny kind of question from a stranger made me grin
I get along, I guess I said I’ve got a house and car
I wondered when the last time was he passed out at the bar
A man like him, he’s just a bum he needs a haircut too
It seemed as though he’d been beat up I saw blood on his shoes
I asked him were he came from, he gazed toward the sky
And then he said “ just up the street “ and winked with just one eye
I asked him where he’s heading, just where he’s going to
He smiled and quietly whispered … “the same place as you”.
He seemed to have so little, why should I waste my time
Talking with a stranger – what was on my mind?
Then he quite surprised me and handed me his book
He said “I wrote it just for you” why don’t you take a look
All he had, he gave to me a stranger on the street
Given by a man who didn’t have enough to eat
Thanks a lot I said and left, the stranger smiled at me
Hey what’s your name I shouted, he answered “JC”
I asked him were he came from, he gazed toward the sky
And then he said “ just up the street “ and winked with just one eye
I asked him where he’s heading, just where he’s going to
He smiled and quietly whispered “the same place as you!
